Online Roulette
Online Roulette is an integral part of any online casino, so we've put together an article explaining the exact game rules, the different types of Roulette, as well as the types of bets you can place.
How do you play Roulette?
To play Roulette properly, you first need to learn and remember all the bets you can make and how to place them. Certain types of bets may require you to put chips on a specific section, such as colour or odd/even bets, whereas chips are put directly on the numbers in a Split or Straight Up bet. The chip must be placed on the line which separates the numbers if you want to bet on more than one number. Many players also try to increase their winning chances by opting for announced bets - betting on a specific section of the wheel. You can give the game a try by playing a free Roulette game in demo mode to understand how it works before gambling real money.
Roulette History
The origins of Roulette date back to the first half of the 17th century. In 1645 Blaise Pascal, a famous French scientist, created a Roulette wheel which was initially supposed to be used in scientific research on the probability calculus theory. It was two hundred years later that Pascal's invention was modified and adapted to create a gambling game. In 1842, the brothers Louis and Francis Blanc decided to add a zero pocket to Pascal's Roulette wheel. A few years later they established the first-ever casino in Monaco.
Roulette gained popularity and started being promoted in casinos around the world in no time. American casinos implemented a change which proved to be unfavourable to players as they added a double zero in the game, giving the casino a higher edge. Fortunately, this change was only adopted in the American variant of Roulette; the European and French Roulette variants have maintained one zero. Later, at the end of the 20th century, online Roulette emerged in the first online casinos.
Basic Roulette Rules
One of the most significant advantages of Roulette is its simple rules. Participants join a table and make their bets by putting a chip on the field corresponding to the specific number/s on the wheel. The Roulette wheel has 37 numbered pockets, from 0 to 36; in American Roulette, there is also a double zero. The game proceeds as follows: once you place your bet, the croupier closes the table and launches a small ball along the rim of a spinning wheel - in the opposite direction. The ball slows down and loses its momentum, eventually descending into one of the coloured and numbered roulette pockets. The ball's final pocket location determines the winning number. Once the round is concluded the ball is removed, and bets are settled. The wheel will continue to spin; in live variants, the wheel may continue in the same direction or it can be reversed by the croupier.
Roulette in Online Casinos
Advanced online casinos, such as LV BET, provide several table game variants. You can choose from European, French Roulette and American Roulette, as well as various other options with modified rules. When playing online Roulette, you're alone at the table, and a computer algorithm controls the game. Several international agencies monitor these types of games to ensure that they are purely random and that the algorithm does not act to a player's disadvantage.
How is a Roulette wheel designed?
The numbers on the Roulette table are positioned chronologically in three rows, and there are specific sectors you can place your bets on when you want to bet on a range of numbers, rather than specific numbers. The numbers on the Roulette wheel, on the other hand, are not in chronological order. The green zero pocket is considered as the starting point of the wheel. You'll find 36 other numbers on the wheel: 18 in black and 18 in red, each colour alternating. Thus, starting from zero, the wheel’s numbers are positioned as follows: 32, 15, 19, 4, 21, 2, 25, 17, 34, 6, 27, 13, 36, 11, 30, 8, 23, 10, 5, 24, 16, 33, 1, 20, 14, 31, 8, 22, 18, 29, 7, 28, 12, 35, 3 and 26.
Roulette in Live Casinos
Roulette is also available in live casino such as LV BET. Live Roulette enables you to compete with other players at an interactive table, while the ball is launched along the rim of a real spinning wheel by a live croupier. Live Roulette has been designed to resemble real-casino entertainment.

Popular Roulette variants in online casinos
Roulette is available in several variants, with an excellent online casino offering at least 6 to 7 options. Here are the most popular types of Roulette you can encounter at an online casino:
European Roulette
European Roulette includes 36 numbered pockets in red and black, as well as a green zero pocket. It's the classic version, and the most opted- for game in casinos.
American Roulette
It differs from the European variant as it has an additional double 0 in a green pocket.
French Roulette
This variant is similar to the standard European Roulette, but is enriched with a sector in which you can bet on specific parts of the wheel. In this variant, you won't lose your entire bet if the ball lands on the zero pocket, but only half of it, unless you placed a bet on the zero.
Pascal's Roulette
Some online casinos also provide the classic Pascal's Roulette without the zero pocket. In this alternative, wins can be paid at different rates.
Multiball Roulette
The rules of this game don't differ from the ones described above, but, as the name suggests, three balls are tossed on the spinning wheel, so three numbers can win per spin.
Mini Roulette
Mini Roulette is a variant with only 12 numbered pockets and one zero pocket.
Roulette with triple chances
This variant functions like Multiball Roulette, but the wheel is slightly modified. In traditional Roulette, every number is assigned to one pocket, but in this variant, three numbers are assigned to each pocket.
If you decide to start playing Roulette, always keep in mind the table's regulations. Every table has its own rules and betting ranges, so each player can choose the table which best meets his expectations.
What types of Roulette bets are available in online casinos?
Roulette primarily requires players to have a good knowledge of the betting options, together with their multipliers. You can place both simple and complex bets in online Roulette. Here are the most straightforward options you can consider:
Red or black – There are 18 black pockets and 18 red pockets on the wheel. You’ll find a section which allows you to bet on the colour at the bottom of the table. Wins are paid 1 to 1.
Even or odd – Aside from the colours section, you can also find an even and odd numbers section. In this case, you also bet on all 18 numbers (odd or even), and wins are paid 1 to 1.
High or Low – You can bet on the pockets from 1 to 18 or on those from 19 to 36. Wins are also paid 1 to 1.
The above options are referred to as simple bets. In theory, the bets mentioned above allow you to bet on 50% of the numbers, and, thus, your chances of winning should be 50%. However, the zero pocket lowers your winning chances by 2.7% in the European variant, while the double zero in American Roulette drops your chances by 5.4%. Thus, the casino is always at an advantage.
Next, you can also choose to make more complex bets:
Dozens – Roulette is composed of three dozens. You can bet on the following fields: from 1 to 12, from 13 to 24 and from 25 to 36. Wins are paid 2 to 1.
Columns – Very similar to the dozens bet, this involves placing a bet on one of the three columns of 12 numbers (excluding the zero pocket). Each column pays 2 to 1.
Lines – You can place chips on two rows of three numbers - betting on six numbers in total. Wins are paid 5 to 1.
First Four/ Five – In the European variant, you bet on the numbers 0, 1, 2 and 3 and in American Roulette, you bet on 0, 00, 1, 2 and 3. Wins are paid 6 to 1 (American) or 8 to 1 (European).
Square – You can place a chip on four adjacent numbers which form a square. Wins are paid 8 to 1.
Three numbers/ Street – You bet on a row of three numbers. Wins are paid 11 to 1.
Two numbers/ Split – Bet on two numbers by placing a chip on the line that separates them. They must be adjacent to each other, and wins pay 17 to 1.
Single number/ Straight up– Here you bet on a specific number. This bet pays the highest: 35 to 1.
Announced bets in French Roulette
In French Roulette, you can also bet on numbers from a specific part of the wheel. Such bets in online Roulette are called announced bets, as they are called out. They cannot be placed in an online casino, but an option you can consider when playing at a land-based casino. Here are the different announced bets you can make:
Tiers – Here you can bet on the numbers between (and including) 27 and 33 on the wheel. This bet is composed of 12 numbers in total. Wins are paid 2 to 1.
Orphelins – Here you can bet on either of two parts of the wheel, from 1 to 9, or from 17 to 6. This bet involves eight numbers.
Voisins – Here you can bet on as many as 17 numbers from the sector 22-25. Wins are paid 1 to 1.
0-spiel – Bet on the numbers closest to zero, precisely 12, 35, 3, 26, 0, 32 and 15. This bet covers seven numbers in total.
Neighbours – This is a bet on a five-number combination: a specific number and its four closest neighbours.
If the game variant you're playing doesn't offer announced bets, these four bets can be made by putting chips on the table. Many players are opting for announced bets because they assume that the chances of the ball landing on a specific more substantial part of the wheel are higher.
Roulette Strategy
The most popular betting strategy is the Martingale system (classic progression) - whereby you increase your bets after every loss, and when you win, you re-start betting with the amount you commenced with. In strategies based on progression, the stakes may rise quickly, so be careful and always play responsibly.
Another progressive strategy you can adopt is the Fibonacci system, which involves increasing your bet at a slower rate based on the Fibonacci Sequence - whereby the next amount you bet equals the sum of the previous two.
