Types of Roulette Bets
If you’ve already decided which Roulette table you want to play on, it’s time to place your best roulette bet. But how do you start placing bets? Tag along with this topic and your doubts will hopefully be put to rest. There are several types of roulette bets any player can make or call. With all that said, when you head to your favourite roulette tables, the main types of bets are inside and outside bets, although several other combinations can be created – the inside bets are essentially placed directly on one or more numbers; the outside include high-low, odd-even, red-black, columns (1st, 2nd and 3rd) and dozen (1st, 2nd and 3rd), etc. Also, several French-inspired bets can be placed, such a neighbour bet, tier du cylinder, orphelins a cheval, voisins du zero, jeu zero (zero game), finale en plain and finale a chaval bets. Some of the bets, however, are not possible on the American roulette table because of the way the roulette wheel numbers are arranged across the table layout.
Inside Roulette Bets
The most common inside roulette bet is the Straight Up (French: En Plein), where you place your chip directly on any single roulette wheel number (including zero). The roulette tables odds on this type of bet are considered fair and if you hit your lucky number you will be looking at a 35:1 payout.
The Split Bet (French: A Cheval) is exactly what it suggests; with this roulette bet you place your chip on the line between any two numbers, either on the vertical or horizontal and it can yield a 17:1 for a lucky hunch. The Street Bet or Transversal consists in betting on three numbers for an 11:1 chance by placing your chip at the end of any row of numbers.
The fab four here is the Corner Bet (French: Carre), where you place your chip at the corner (central intersection) where four numbers meet and of course, all the four numbers are covered on the bet to hopefully pay you 8:1.
For the more cautious bettors, the Line Bet with a possible payout of 5 to 1 can be something to be cherished – this bet happens when you place your chip at the end of the intersection between the two rows. With a Line Bet, you cover all the roulette wheel numbers in both rows with a total of six lucky numbers in a roulette round. It is valid to mention that a five-number bet is also possible and popular, especially on the American double-zero roulette tables and it includes the roulette wheel numbers: 0, 00, 1, 2 and 3, paying around 6 to 1. The house edge on this bet is considerable and not advisable to be bet all the time or at least not without a basic roulette strategy in place, unless you are feeling remarkably lucky on the day.
Outside Roulette Bets
As for the types of outside roulette bets we have first and foremost the Column Bet (French: Colonne), where you simply place your chip in one of the boxes marked ‘2 to 1’ at the end of the column that covers all 12 numbers in that column and as it suggests, you can place this roulette bet for a 2:1 payout. It is valid to note that the number zero is not covered by any of the column bets.
Another way to bet on 12 numbers but in a different combination is with the Dozen Bet, where you place your chip in one of the three boxes marked ‘1st 12’, ‘2nd 12’ or ‘3rd 12’ to cover the 12 numbers alongside the chosen box. You place your chips and faith on a set of 18 numbers for a 1:1 payout - they are 1-18 or 19-36. This is the high-low type of roulette bet.
The last two types of roulette bets are said to be the best way to play roulette for players who want to keep it simple, since you pretty much have to choose between two outcomes, being them Red/Black or Even/Odd – with basic roulette odds, when you place this type of bet you are expecting that 18 numbers present on the wheel will be either black/red and/or even/odd, with both bets not covering the number zero.
